Why Adhesive Selection Matters
If your clients are coming back too early because their lashes haven’t lasted, your glue is usually the reason.
You can do the most perfect set in the world, but if your adhesive isn’t right for your room, speed or client, the lashes simply won’t last properly. Retention starts with your glue. ✨
At Leo Lash Range, we know every lash tech works differently. Different room temperatures, humidity levels, application speeds and client lifestyles all affect how your adhesive performs. That’s why we created a range of professional glues to suit different techniques, environments and experience levels — helping you get better retention and longer-lasting sets every time.
Understanding Adhesive Chemistry
Lash extension adhesives are primarily made from cyanoacrylate, a fast-bonding polymer that cures (hardens) when exposed to moisture in the air. This is why humidity plays such a crucial role in adhesive performance. The curing process is what creates the strong bond between the natural lash and the extension, and understanding this process is key to mastering retention.
When adhesive cures too quickly, it can become brittle and create a weak bond. When it cures too slowly, it may not fully set before the client opens their eyes or the lashes are exposed to moisture, again resulting in poor retention. The sweet spot is finding an adhesive with a drying time that matches your application speed and working environment.

Super Bonder: The Retention Booster
Super Bonder isn't an adhesive itself, but rather a game-changing product that works with your chosen adhesive to maximize retention and client comfort. Applied after your lash application is complete, Super Bonder instantly cures the adhesive, locking in your work and dramatically reducing sensitivity.
By instantly polymerizing the adhesive, Super Bonder eliminates the 24-48 hour curing period during which clients must avoid water and steam. This means your clients can shower, exercise, and live their normal lives immediately after their appointment without compromising retention. It also significantly reduces fumes, making the experience more comfortable for sensitive clients.
Environmental Factors: Creating the Perfect Conditions
The mistake most lash techs make with retention is ignoring the glue instructions 👀
If your adhesive says it works best in certain temperatures and humidity levels… it genuinely DOES need to be used in them conditions.
Lash glue is a chemical. It reacts to the environment around it constantly. So if your room is too hot, too cold, too dry or too humid, your glue will start curing incorrectly.
That means:
✨ poor retention
✨ lashes twisting
✨ stickies
✨ brittle bonds
✨ fans closing
✨ lashes popping off early
You can’t just buy any glue and hope for the best without checking your room conditions. Your glue might not actually be the problem — your environment probably is.
This is why every Leo Lash Range adhesive has recommended humidity and temperature ranges listed. We’re not just writing it for fun 😅 it genuinely affects how the glue performs.
Once you start matching your glue to your room conditions properly, your retention changes massively.
Humidity and temperature are a HUGE part of lash retention 👀
Your glue reacts to the air around it all day long, so if your room conditions are wrong, your glue won’t work properly.
If the air is TOO dry (Low humidity):
✨ your glue cures slower
✨ bonds don’t set properly
✨ retention can suffer
If the air is TOO humid (high humidity):
✨ your glue cures too fast
✨ the glue can become brittle
✨ lashes can start popping off early
Temperature matters too.
If your room is too cold, the glue becomes thicker and slower.
If your room is too warm, the glue becomes thinner and dries too quickly.
This is why every adhesive has recommended humidity and temperature ranges — they genuinely matter.
A hygrometer is one of the best tools you can buy as a lash tech because it tells you exactly what your room conditions are.
And please stop putting your glue in the fridge 😭 it’s one of the biggest lash myths and can actually ruin the adhesive instead of helping it.
Application Techniques for Maximum Retention
Proper Adhesive Dispensing
Always dispense a fresh drop of adhesive every 15-20 minutes. As adhesive sits exposed to air, it begins to cure and thicken, affecting performance. Use a glue ring or jade stone, and replace the drop regularly even if you haven't used all of it. This small habit makes a massive difference in retention.
The Perfect Dip
How much adhesive you pick up on each extension matters enormously. Too little, and you won't have enough bonding surface. Too much, and you risk creating clumps, stickies, or a heavy, uncomfortable application. The goal is to coat approximately 1-2mm of the extension base with a thin, even layer of adhesive.
For classic lashes, dip the base of the extension into the adhesive at a slight angle, then gently wipe one side on the edge of your adhesive drop to remove excess. For volume fans, dip just the base of the fan, ensuring adhesive doesn't travel up into the fan itself.
Placement and Attachment
Place the extension 0.5-1mm away from the eyelid, never touching the skin. The extension should be attached along 2-3mm of the natural lash for optimal retention. Ensure the extension is placed correctly on the natural lash, make sure the base of the extension is secure to the base of the natural lash.
Apply gentle pressure for 1-2 seconds after placement to ensure proper bonding. This brief moment of contact allows the adhesive to begin forming its bond with the natural lash.
Troubleshooting Common Retention Issues
Extensions Falling Off Within Days
If lashes are falling off within the first few days, the problem usually isn’t the glue 👀
Most of the time it comes down to application issues such as:
✨ natural lashes not being cleaned properly
✨ oils or makeup left on the lashes
✨ not enough adhesive being used
✨ poor attachment
✨ stickies
✨ incorrect room conditions
If lashes are stuck together (stickies), multiple natural lashes can get pulled out and shed together, making retention look much worse than it actually is.
And if the natural lash hasn’t been prepped properly before application, the glue simply can’t bond correctly.
Retention isn’t just about WHAT glue you use — it’s about your prep, placement, room conditions and technique all working together.
No lashes left after 1 to 2 weeks
If your clients are returning after just 1–2 weeks with barely any lashes left for an infill, this usually points to a retention issue rather than a natural shedding cycle. While clients should normally require infills every 2–3 weeks, they should still have a good amount of extensions remaining at that appointment.
Poor retention within the first couple of weeks can often be caused by incorrect humidity or temperature, poor natural lash preparation, expired adhesive, incorrect attachment, insufficient bonding surface, or aftercare problems.
To improve retention, start by checking your room conditions with a hygrometer to ensure your temperature and humidity match your adhesive’s recommended ranges. Make sure the natural lashes are thoroughly cleansed before application, as oils, makeup residue, and skincare can prevent the adhesive from bonding correctly.
You should also assess your attachment technique. The extension should have enough contact with the natural lash to create a secure bond, without being stuck to multiple lashes or placed incorrectly. Even the best adhesive will struggle if the application technique is poor.
Finally, don’t overlook aftercare. Clients who use oily products, avoid cleansing their lashes, sleep face-down, or expose lashes to excessive heat and friction are far more likely to experience poor retention.
Good retention does not mean lashes last forever without maintenance — it means your client still has enough healthy extensions remaining for a proper infill appointment after 2–3 weeks.
Inconsistent Retention
If some clients have great retention while others don't, despite similar application techniques, consider individual factors: client's natural lash growth cycle (some people's lashes shed faster), hormonal factors (pregnancy, menopause, thyroid issues affect lash retention), medications (some medications increase oil production or affect lash growth), and lifestyle factors (swimmers, gym enthusiasts, and those who sleep face-down may experience faster shedding). This is where the correct aftercare in dept must be given see our other blog post!
Adhesive Storage and Shelf Life
Proper storage extends adhesive life and maintains performance. Store unopened adhesive in a cool, dark place at room temperature. Once opened, most adhesives last 4-6 weeks with proper care. Our glues at Leo lash have a opened shelf life of 3 months! and unopened of 6! but remember always keep the nozzle clean, wiping it after each use and ensuring the cap is tightly sealed. Store upright to prevent adhesive from curing in the nozzle.
Never refrigerate adhesive – condensation that forms when you remove it from the fridge introduces moisture that begins the curing process. Similarly, don't store adhesive in direct sunlight or near heat sources.
Conclusion: Mastery Through Understanding
Mastering lash adhesives isn't about finding one "perfect" product – it's about understanding the science behind adhesive performance, creating optimal working conditions, perfecting your application technique, and educating your clients. With the right adhesive from Leo Lash Range matched to your skill level and environment, combined with proper technique and client care, you can achieve consistently excellent retention that keeps your clients coming back and your reputation growing.
Remember, every lash artist's journey with adhesives is unique. Don't be afraid to experiment with different products from our range to find what works best for your specific situation. Perfect retention is absolutely achievable – and it starts with understanding your adhesive.
