The Ultimate Guide to Choosing the Perfect Lash Extensions for Your Clients

The Ultimate Guide to Choosing the Perfect Lash Extensions for Your Clients

Choosing lash extensions for clients can feel SO overwhelming when you first start lashing 😭

One client wants “natural but noticeable.”
The next wants “wispy but full but not too dramatic.”
Then another walks in with three natural lashes hanging on for dear life asking for mega volume 💀

The truth is, choosing the right lashes isn’t just about what looks pretty — it’s about learning how to match the right lashes to the right client. Their eye shape, natural lash health, lifestyle and desired look all matter. Once you understand THAT, lash styling becomes so much easier.

Classic Lashes – For Your “Mascara Look” Girls

Classic lashes are perfect for clients who want to look naturally prettier rather than obviously lashy. Think:
✨ “I just want to wake up looking fresh”
✨ “I want mascara vibes”
✨ “Nothing too dramatic”

Classics work best on clients who already have a decent amount of natural lashes because remember — you can only place ONE extension onto ONE natural lash. So if the client has sparse lashes naturally, classics can sometimes look a bit too gappy.

For clients with finer or weaker natural lashes, stick to lighter thicknesses like 0.10 or 0.12 to protect lash health.

Classic lashes are AMAZING for:

  • mature clients

  • first-time lash clients

  • professional/workplace-friendly looks

  • naturally full lash lines

But if your client wants fluff, density or strip lash vibes… classics alone usually won’t give that.

Russian Volume – For Sparse Lashes & Glam Girls

Russian lashes are where the MAGIC happens for clients with sparse natural lashes 👀

Because you’re creating fans instead of using single lashes, you can fill gaps much easier and create a fuller, fluffier lash line without needing loads of natural lashes to work with.

Russian volume is PERFECT for:
✨ sparse natural lashes
✨ clients who love makeup
✨ glam/full lash lovers
✨ strip lash effect
✨ wispy styling
✨ clients who want dark lash lines

And this is where lash techs often panic at first — thinking volume always has to mean HUGE lashes. It doesn’t 😭

You can create:

  • soft fluffy Russians

  • eyeliner effect lashes

  • wet sets

  • dramatic mega volume

  • natural wispy sets

ALL using volume techniques.

Your diameter choice matters massively here:

  • 0.03–0.05 = mega/full volume

  • 0.05–0.07 = softer Russian sets

If your client has weak natural lashes, making massive heavy fans just because they “want mega volume” is NOT worth damaging their lashes for. Sometimes you have to customise the look to suit what their lashes can safely hold.

Flat Lashes – The Secret Weapon

Flat lashes are honestly underrated 😭

They’re AMAZING for clients who:

  • love dark lash lines

  • want fuller-looking classics

  • have weaker natural lashes

  • struggle with retention

Because flat lashes have a flatter base, they grip the natural lash better which can help retention. They also look darker than normal classic lashes without adding loads of weight.

So if your client says:
✨ “I want classics but a bit fuller”
✨ “I don’t like fluffy Russians”
✨ “I want dark but natural”

Flat lashes are usually PERFECT.

Easy Fans & ProMades – For Lash Tech Sanity 😂

Easy fans and ProMades are honestly lifesavers for busy lash techs.

Easy fans help you create fans quicker and more consistently, while ProMades are pre-made and ready to go — perfect when:

  • you’re still learning volume

  • you’re fully booked

  • you struggle making fans

  • you want to reduce appointment times

And no — using ProMades doesn’t make you a “bad lash tech.” Let’s stop that conversation immediately 😭

Clients care about the RESULTS, retention and styling way more than how the fan was made.

Choosing Lashes Based on Eye Shape

THIS is where styling changes EVERYTHING 👀

Round Eyes

Usually suit longer outer corners to elongate the eyes and avoid making them look too “surprised.”

Hooded Eyes

Super long lashes can hit the brow bone and make the eyes look heavy. Shorter lengths with a stronger curl usually work much better.

Deep Set Eyes

These clients can usually handle more drama because the eyes naturally sit further back.

Close Set Eyes

Keep more length towards the outer corners to visually widen the eyes.

Downturned Eyes

Avoid dragging the outer corners too low with long lengths — lifting curls and soft doll eye styling usually works better.

And honestly? HALF of lash styling is looking at someone’s face and asking yourself:
✨ what feature do I want to enhance?
✨ what feature do I want to soften?
✨ do I want to lift, elongate or open the eye?

Once you start thinking like that, styling becomes SO much easier.

Curl Choice Makes a HUGE Difference

A lot of beginner lash techs focus only on length, but curl changes the ENTIRE look.

✨ C curl = the safe popular girl
Works on most clients and gives a pretty lifted look.

✨ D curl = dramatic & open eye effect
Perfect for clients with straight natural lashes or glam lovers.

✨ B curl = softer natural lift
Great for mature clients or softer sets.

And remember:
Sometimes a shorter lash with a stronger curl looks WAY better than an extra long lash that drags the eye down 👀

The Biggest Lash Tech Mistake?

Trying to give EVERY client the same set.

Not everybody suits mega volume.
Not everybody suits long cat eyes.
Not everybody should have 15mm lashes 😭

Good lash techs don’t just apply lashes. They customise sets to suit the CLIENT.

That’s what takes somebody from “lashes look nice” to:
✨ “OMG these suit me SO much.”

Lash Mapping Examples

One of the easiest ways to start understanding styling is by learning the difference between the most popular lash maps 👀

The SAME lashes can look completely different depending on where you place the lengths.

Cat Eye Lash Map ✨

A cat eye style gradually gets longer towards the outer corners of the eyes.

Example map:
8mm → 9mm → 10mm → 11mm → 12mm → 13mm

This creates an elongated, sexy effect and is AMAZING for clients who love:

  • wispy lashes

  • fox eye styles

  • eyeliner effect sets

  • glam looks

BUTTTT… cat eyes do NOT suit everybody 😭

On downturned eyes, very long outer corners can sometimes drag the eyes downward and make them look droopy or tired.

For clients with downturned eyes, try:
✨ a soft cat eye
✨ squirrel styling
✨ shorter outer corners

instead of making the very end super long.

Doll  / Open Eye Lash Map 👀

A doll style places the longest lengths through the centre of the eye to create a bigger, rounder, more open-eyed look.

Example map:
8mm → 9mm → 10mm → 12mm → 10mm → 9mm

This style is AMAZING for:

  • clients with smaller eyes

  • hooded eyes

  • clients wanting a cute feminine look

  • clients wanting their eyes to appear bigger

Doll styles usually suit more people universally because they lift and open the eyes rather than dragging them outward.

The Secret To Better Lash Styling

Don’t just ask:
✨ “What lashes does the client want?”

Ask:
✨ “What style will actually SUIT them best?”

Sometimes clients ask for cat eyes because they look amazing on Instagram, but their eye shape would actually suit a doll eye or squirrel map much better.

This is why consultations matter so much — your job isn’t just applying lashes, it’s customising a set that enhances your client’s features 💖
